Dog Walking

Dog Walking

Good company — on two legs and four.

Walking is one of the simplest things you can do for your health, and a dog gives you a reason to get out the door every day. Walking with a group adds what many of us are missing: easy, regular conversation with people who live nearby.

What the research says

  • You move more. Dog owners consistently walk more than people without dogs — in one UK study of older adults, about 2½ extra hours a week.

  • You meet people. New dog owners in an Australian study felt less lonely within three months, often because their dog helped them meet neighbours.

  • The honest part: the dog gets you out the door; the people and the extra movement do the rest.

Before you try it

Dogs should be licensed and vaccinated, and on-leash in parking lots and on paved paths — those are City of Calgary rules. Not sure your dog is off-leash ready? A leash is always welcome, and we keep a slower group at the back.

Example: Wednesday Dog Walk

Every Wednesday, 11 am – noon

Oakridge Off Leash Area, SW Calgary

An easy-paced hour with other dog owners. The dogs play, the people chat, and first-timers get introduced around. Puppies, senior dogs and shy dogs welcome. No dog? Come anyway.
